Adana,
another of Turkey's historically fascinating treasure houses with a nice
climate, is the centre of
Cukurova - one of Cilicia's pivotal cities and of the country's cotton
industry. Sitting on the eatern foot of the green Taurus mountains in
the center of an expansive plain and only a stone's throw from the
Mediterranean, this well-irrigated and
productive land served to make it appealing as a prime location for
many civilizations, like the Hittites and Ottomans. Now Turkey's fourth-largest
city, Adana has begun taking on a more modern look. According to Anatolian
mythology, Adana is thought to have gotten its name from Adanus, the son
of the Greek god of the heavens, Uranus, and sits astride the Seyhan (Sarus)
River linking it to the Mediterranean Sea.
Adana
will
most certainly not disappoint visitors, with the city itself a treasure
trove of
museums, mosques and other architectural vestiges of Adana's illustrious
past. Take a drive across
a 4th-century bridge, the Tasköprü, designed by the Roman architect, Auexntus,
and constructed with 21 arches, 7 of which are under water. Walking
the streets of the modern Adana, guests will be fascinated by the juxtaposition
of the ages. The outdoors
person
can leave the city behind by heading to the nearby Taurus mountains for
trekking. Hunters will find
plenty of game such as hare, fox and lynx on the Taurus; or how about
the Karanfıl Mountains for various game birds.
Adana has so much to offer a visitor that it has begun to attract
tourism from the west as travelers head deeper into Asia and the Middle
Eastern world, with Turkey as its gateway.
